The fans of Kamaru Usman e Colby covington They have plenty of reasons to be excited. This Saturday (6), at UFC 267, in New York (USA), the welterweight champion (up to 77kg.) and his biggest rival will once again share the Octagon and will repeat the great battle that took place in December 2019. In 2019, the scenario was perfect for a historic confrontation. On the one hand, the champion would make his first title defense. On the other, the former owner of the group's interim belt sought to conquer, for the first time, the absolute throne of the category.
The rivalry between Kamaru and Covington didn't just stop inside the Octagon. For months, the athletes provoked each other and spiced up the duel that headlined the UFC 245.
In the fight (see below), what we saw most was balance and aggressiveness. For almost 25 minutes, the welterweights exchanged hard blows, seeking a quick outcome and stirring up the audience at the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas (USA).
When many thought that the dispute would be resolved by the judges' decision, Usman managed to surprise. With just under a minute left in the fight, the Nigerian scored a knockout over the North American, extending his reign in the division.
UFC 268
Almost two years have passed and the athletes remain at the top of the welterweight division. Kamaru remains the absolute leader of the group, having won, after defeating Colby, three more belt defenses.
To regain his status as a challenger, Covington needed a single victory, and it was against a former group champion. In September 2020, the North American agreed to face Tyron woodley and he passed with ease, beating the former 'king' by technical knockout in the fifth round, after dominating him in the initial rounds.
