Two of the main MMA athletes of the early 2000s, alistair overeem e Fedor Emelianenko had several opportunities to face each other. However, the Dutch veteran stated that the fight was not made official because the Russian fighter had refused the duel three times. The statement was made in an interview with 'MMA Fighting'.

“We tried to do this fight in 2010 when he fought (Fabrício) Werdum and I fought Brett Rogers but he refused. After he lost to Werdum, we tried to do it again and he refused. And now (in 2021) he hasn't accepted it again. So there are three declines, I think, with all due respect, that there is no interest on the other side to fight me and I can't blame Fedor. Listen, I'm getting a little older too. A little not a lot. He's a little older than me, I think he's 45 or 46, so I understand. But I did everything I could to make this fight happen, over the last 10 years and now”, said Overeem.
After a 10-year stint in the UFC, Overeem decided to return to Kickboxing and will face heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven at the 'GLORY' event scheduled for October 23rd. In MMA, the 41-year-old veteran has a record of 47 wins and 19 losses.
