Carwin arrived at the UFC undefeated at the age of 33, in 2008, after having eight fights as a professional. In the main MMA organization on the planet, the North American won his first two fights and won the interim belt in the heavyweight division, after victory over Frank mir, in sequence.

Shane's interim title was short-lived. A few months after the victory over Mir, he suffered his first defeat, to Brock Lesnar, in the unification of the heavyweight belt. Then, in his last fight as a professional, in June 2011, Carwin lost to the Brazilian Junior Gypsy.

This was his last attempt to return to active duty before the announcement of his permanent retirement from the sport.
