To 'recover' McGregor, Sonnen suggests that UFC promote a rematch between the Irishman and Aldo

Commentator explains why it would make sense to re-edit the fateful fight fought in 2015, when the 'Notório' passed the Brazilian in just 13 seconds

With the Irishman recovering from a serious ankle injury, the American understands that the athlete needs a specific duel for his return to MMA. The analyst then surprised by suggesting a rematch against José Aldo, victim of the 'Notório' in 2015.

“If you are aiming for the return of Conor McGregor and wants him to get back on track, he needs to face someone smaller. He needs someone who will just go and strike with him. I think that José Aldo meets many requirements”, said Sonnen, to 'Max on MMA'.

Highlights in the history of Ultimate, Aldo and McGregor fought one of the biggest rivalries in the company's recent history. In 2015, when they were still performing at featherweight (up to 65,7kg), the fighters came face to face in the main fight of UFC 194, valid for the category's linear belt.

The duel was marked by several provocations from the Irishman to the 'People's Champion'. One of the episodes that marked was the moment when, at the promotional press conference, the 'Notório' 'stole' Aldo's belt, causing the Brazilian's irritation.

In the fight, a moment of sadness for many Brazilians. A legend in the category, José ended up succumbing to McGregor's precise hands and had his reign ended with a knockout in just 13 seconds.

At the time, Aldo and his team insisted that a rematch was necessary. The UFC board, however, understood differently and Conor continued his successful path, moving up to lightweight and becoming the company's first double champion.

Today, José is experiencing a new moment in his career. After a period of instability at featherweight, Manauara decided to test himself in the lower category. The fighter is going through a good phase, with two positive results in a row and is being considered for a future title fight.

Unlike the Brazilian, McGregor is far from shining in MMA, as he was a few years ago. The 'Notório' has three defeats in his last five appearances and has not won at lightweight since 2016. Furthermore, the fighter suffered a serious injury in the duel that ended the trilogy with Dustin poirier, by whom he was beaten twice in 2021 alone.
