The UFC currently has six women on its fighter roster, all of them in the bantamweight category (up to 61 kg), including Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche – who face each other in the first women's fight in the organization's history. This small number of fighters' days are numbered. Ultimate's president, Dana White, revealed that he already has nine more names practically certain and that they will be added to the only women's division soon.
Despite already having a satisfactory number of fighters on the roster, White does not believe in the creation of a female featherweight category (up to 66 kg) in the near future. “We’ll see what happens, but I don’t know if we would add the featherweight category in the coming months, because during the year we will strengthen this bantamweight division,” he said last Friday (22), in an interview during the promotion of the UFC 157.
The director did not detail who the nine athletes would be arriving at Ultimate. Instead, he preferred to comment on the positive impact that the first women's fight in UFC history has had. “It’s incredible how many women are talking about this fight. We're hearing in Las Vegas that all the women are telling their friends they're tagging along. This thing is bigger than I thought,” he concluded.
