Next in line in the fight for the welterweight title (up to 77kg.), Colby covington has already started the promotion for a possible rematch against Kamaru Usman. Defeated by the champion in 2019, the North American indicated that the Nigerian will retire if he wins his commitment in the UFC 261, this Saturday (24), to escape a new fight. In an interview with reporter Helen Yee, the ‘loudmouth’ fired a shot at his former opponent.

“I see myself submitting Usman if we fight again. To be honest, I think he's going to retire. I think he retires after this weekend. He knows what's coming. I'm next in line and he can't beat me. He shared the Octagon with me, he knows how tough I am,” said Colby.

eyeing the UFC 261, Covington bets that Kamaru will have no problems in the new confrontation against his former friend, Jorge masvidal. For the North American, the Nigerian accepted the rematch against ‘Jesus das Ruas’ as he considered it a less complicated challenge to remain at the top of the division.

“He has already faced Jorge and knows how easy it is to beat him. That’s why he took this ‘easy money’. It has nothing to do with winning the fight. He (Masvidal) lost badly (in 2020) and suddenly gets a title fight again? I think Usman and Masvidal will retire before fighting me, because they know what will happen. This is shameful, publicly shameful. They don't want to be embarrassed under the eyes of the whole world. That’s what I would do to them,” concluded Covington.

Current number one in the welterweight rankings, behind only Usman, Colby has not performed since his dominant victory over the former division champion, Tyron woodley. The ‘ride’ on his compatriot earned the ‘loudmouth’ the passport to fight for the title against the winner of this Saturday’s main fight.

In 2019, Kamaru and Covington had one of the most exciting fights of the season. On that occasion, the Nigerian ended up winning by knockout in the fifth round, making his first title defense.
