In the first meeting, Masvidal experienced an atypical situation. The athlete agreed to face Usman with less than a week to go before the fight. The North American went to 'Ilha da Luta', in July 2020, to replace Gilbert Durinho, who left the dispute after testing positive for Covid-19.

Facing Kamaru, Masvidal ended up being an easy prey to the Nigerian's strategy. Although he showed a lot of resistance, the American produced little and ended up defeated after five rounds, with a unanimous decision from the judges.
