Money or pride? UFC president Dana White confirmed that Dustin poirier rejected a fight for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3kg.) to carry out the trilogy against Conor McGregor. “Dana White told me that he offered a fight for the lightweight belt and that the athlete decided to pursue the trilogy with Conor McGregor”, wrote reporter Aaron Bronsteter, on his account on Twitter.
Current number one in the category's ranking, which, until the beginning of this week, was second only to Khabib, Poirier starred in one of the most profitable events in MMA history, in January. At the UFC 257, the North American shared the octagon with the 'Notório' and shocked the world by delivering the first knockout in the Irishman's career.
As Poirier and McGregor had already faced each other in 2015 – with a victory for Conor – the dispute ended in a draw. The result gave rise to a tiebreaker match, which, in addition to being a personal challenge for the combatants, could yield millions of dollars for the competitors.
With Dustin out, Ultimate made it official Charles of the Bronx e Michael chandler as challengers to fight for the category's vacant belt. The athletes will exchange forces in the UFC 262, which will define the new lightweight leader, ending the 'Khabib Era'.
Recently, the 'Adjarasport TV', revealed that the Ultimate works to promote the new meeting between Poirier and McGregor for UFC 264, scheduled for July 10th. The winner of the clash can guarantee the chance to compete for the title in the future.
Dana White told me that Dustin poirier was offered a shot at the lightweight title and decided to pursue the Conor McGregor rematch instead.
