Even with a 'no contest', Leon Edwards believes he deserves a title fight

“He (Edwards) hadn’t fought in two years. He's got a 'I didn't answer' which, by the way, should have been a 'disqualification'. He punched the guy (Muhammad) in the face in the first round and, in the locker room, I know that Herb Dean (duel referee) gave the instructions. (…) These are the recommendations you receive before your appointments. He should have been disqualified. Therefore, he still hasn't fought in two years. How does he stay in the rankings?” asked Covington.

Current number one in the category, behind only the champion, Kamaru Usman, Colby went further. Outraged by the outcome of last weekend's show, the North American mocked Leon, who asked for a title fight even without beating Belal.

“It's hilarious. I saw that some said: 'it was an accident!'. An accident would be if one of the lights above the octagon fell on one of the fighters' heads. If Herb Dean had a heart attack and was unable to handle the match. This is an accident. A second finger in the eye, a third finger, are not accidents. The fight against Muhammad marked Leon's return to the octagon after more than a year and a half of inactivity. Seeking his ninth consecutive victory in the category, the Englishman had not performed since his victory over Rafael dos Anjos, in September 2019.

In 2020, the Englishman reached third place in the group, threatened by his inactivity. Afraid of losing his position, Edwards even accepted a duel against the new Ultimate sensation, Khamzat Shimaev. The Swede, however, ended up leaving the contest as a result of Covid-19, giving way to Belal.
