Even dejected by the incident, the combatant explained the idea.

“I think the title fight should be the next step. (…) I've been undefeated for eight fights. Tonight would be the ninth (consecutive win). I was clearly winning the fight. I should be the next challenger”, said the fighter.
Before the tragic outcome, which occurred in the opening seconds of the second round, Edwards put on a great performance against his last-minute rival. With precise strikes, the Englishman dominated the match in the opening five minutes.
Against Muhammad, who replaced Khamzat Shimaev, Leon defended third place in the ranking and had reasons to show off the spectators. In the week before the fight, UFC president, Dana White, stated that, if the welterweight had a convincing performance, the title fight was assured.
Even without winning, Edwards increased his number of fights without defeat to nine. The athlete doesn't know what it's like to lose since the negative result for Kamaru Usman, in 2015, when the Nigerian had not yet won the category title.
