After being defeated by Jingliang Li, upon his return to the UFC after two years, Santiago Ponzinibbio seeks to recover quickly and get back on the path to victory. For this, the 'Argentino Gente Boa' already has an opponent in sight: the veteran and former welterweight champion (under 77kg) Robbie Lawler. In an interview with the North American website 'MMA Junkie', the combatant proposed the clash.

“I was well prepared for the last fight and I'm in good shape. If any opportunity arises, I can return as soon as possible. I feel great and I have that bitter taste that I can only get rid of with a victory. I'm excited. There are a lot of good fights, but they are often based on rankings. As much as I want to fight someone in the top-5, it's not realistic. I don't even think I'll face a top 10 player. I'd like to fight Lawler. He has been in the sport for 14, 15 years, is a former champion and striker like me. It would be a fun fight for the fans. It's an interesting fight. There are a lot of fun fights,” said Ponzinibbio.

Santiago was part of the top-15 welterweight division before suffering an unfortunate series of injuries that left him away from the Octagon for just over two years. Already Robbie Lawler is not in a good phase, the former champion has four defeats in his last five fights and has not won a fight since 2017, when he defeated Donald Cerrone.

A fight between the Argentine and Lawler was scheduled for the UFC 245, in December 2019. Santiago, however, was injured and the fight was cancelled.
