Durinho on defeat to Usman: 'It happens when you're looking for greatness'

Beaten by the welterweight champion at UFC 258, Brazilian reflects on last weekend's fight

A few days after the defeat suffered by Kamaru Usman No. UFC 258, Gilbert Durinho still recovering mentally from the setback. Challenger for the welterweight belt (under 77kg), the Brazilian used social media to reflect on his performance against the champion. In an emotional and sincere publication, the athlete promises to continue evolving.

“I didn’t get the results I wanted on Saturday. That's what happens sometimes when you're striving for greatness. I gave it my all. I believe I had one of my best preparations to date. It was very good and it was clear that it wasn’t enough”, wrote the Brazilian.

Without looking for excuses, the Niteroi native did not deny that the moment is difficult to abstract. The athlete, however, admitted that he has gone through other difficult moments in his career.

“I'm down, of course, but never finished. I believe everything happens for a reason. I believe and serve God! This is my journey, and I accept it without excuses, without regrets. But always evolving and improving. (…) The loss of this title has hurt a lot, but it is a pain with which I am very familiar”, he concluded.

The meeting with Usman marked Durinho's first fight as an Ultimate fighter. To get to the fight against the Nigerian, the fighter won four victories in a row, one of them over the former division champion, Tyron woodley.
