Two-time Judo world champion João Derly left the Beijing Olympics without the gold medal he dreamed of.
The judoka from Rio Grande do Sul was defeated in the second fight by the Portuguese Pedro Dias, with a waza-ari. As in the following fight Pedro lost to the North Korean Pak Chol Min, Derly had no chance of competing in the repechage for bronze.
