Michael Chiesa fights strategically and beats Neil Magny on points at UFC Ilha da Luta 8

North American bets on takedowns and dominates opponent for almost 25 minutes in the main clash, in Abu Dhabi

Faced with an experienced opponent, Michael chiesa made the challenge against Neil Magny in the main clash of UFC Fight Island 8, held this Wednesday (20), in Abu Dhabi. During five rounds, the North American strictly followed the strategy outlined by his team and dominated his rival for 25 minutes. At the end of the confrontation, the athlete was declared the winner with a unanimous decision by the judges.

With an eye on the top 5 welterweights (up to 77kg), Chiesa confirmed his 100% success rate since debuting in the category led by Kamaru Usman. After the new positive result, Michael reached the fourth positive result in a row.

While Chiesa further cemented his good form, Magny ended up losing an undefeated series of three matches. An easy prey to his opponent's takedowns, the fighter had not lost since the setback to Santiago PonzinibbioIn 2018.

The fight

Chiesa took the initiative in the confrontation with a low kick, which was promptly answered by a jab from Magny. The athletes tried to find the best distance to launch their attacks. Michael continued to bet on kicks, while Neil saved on attacks. Halfway through the round, Magny launched a series of punches, which forced Chiesa to walk back. Taking advantage of his rival's oversight, Michael looked for his legs and managed to take down his opponent. Neil defended himself, while Michael tried to pass the guard. In the final minute, Chiesa remained in an advantageous position, but there was no more time.

In the second stage, Magny came back more aggressive. At first, the athlete threw a series of punches to Chiesa's face, followed by a kick to the waistline. At a disadvantage, Michael tried a takedown again, but Neil defended himself well. Michael insisted on the takedown and pressed his opponent against the bars. After a lot of trying, Chiesa took Magny to the ground, but the opponent got up quickly. Standing, Michael again took advantage of Neil's carelessness and knocked him down again. Dominating, Chiesa started throwing elbows at his opponent's face, looking for an opening to finish. Magny defended himself as best he could and waited and ended up saved by the bell.

The third round started with Magny attacking Chiesa with punches. Neil grabbed his opponent and the confrontation began to be played against the fences. After just over a minute, Magny managed to take Michael down and immediately sought his opponent's back, who was defending himself to avoid a rear naked choke. Chiesa got up and managed to move away from his opponent. Halfway through the round, Chiesa managed to regain control of the actions and took down Magny again. In an advantageous position, Michael struck from top to bottom, but the timer ran to zero.

The athletes began the fourth stage studying each other in the center of the octagon. After risking a direct shot, Neil ended up being taken down by Chiesa and was once again placed in a disadvantageous position. Magny tried to get up, but ended up neglecting his neck. Michael started to risk the rear naked choke, but Magny showed resistance and managed to get out of the situation. Neil managed to get up and went after Chiesa, risking a flying knee. Michael grabbed his rival again and the duel was once again fought on the ground. Magny threatened an inverted triangle, but Chiesa got out of position easily. In the final seconds, the athletes produced little.

In the last round, Chiesa started to manage the result and avoided taking risks. Needing a knockout or a submission, Magny was looking for the best moment to attack, but ended up being grabbed by his opponent and pressed against the bars. Neil managed to reverse the situation, but ended up falling into a disadvantageous position. On top, Chiesa dominated his opponent and didn't allow Magny to react. The confrontation ended with Michael over his rival.
