Upon learning of Nate Diaz in the lightweight division, Conor McGregor plans a trilogy worth a belt

Close to returning to the octagon, Irishman says he is open to a trilogy with 'bad-boy'; athletes faced each other twice in 2016, with one victory each

In addition to stirring the spirits of many MMA fans, the information that Dana White is negotiating a fight for Nate Diaz at lightweight (up to 70,3kg.) also excited Conor McGregor. Opponent of the North American on two occasions, the 'Notório' did not hide his satisfaction upon learning that his rival should soon appear in the group. In an interview with 'TheMacLife', the Irishman commented on the matter.

“I heard Dana (White) saying that Nate diaz is moving down to lightweight. I love it. I would love to compete against him. Let's face each other again. If it happens at lightweight for a belt, it would be something special too,” said Conor.

The joy of seeing one of his biggest rivals in the sport moving from welterweight (up to 77kg) to the lower group coincides with McGregor's personal desire. Former double UFC champion, the Irishman stated that he would like to test himself more often against lightweight opponents. Even though he won the division belt in 2016, the athlete had a – so far – brief stint in the category.

“I would like to spend time at lightweight, for sure. I came to the UFC as a featherweight (up to 65,7kg) and went through the entire division. I gave my all to that category and ripped through it like a chainsaw through butter. Interim champion and then unified belt. Then, for the heaviest divisions, I became lightweight champion and the first double champion in the company’s history”, concluded McGregor.

While Nate continues to negotiate his future, McGregor is focused on his return to the Octagon. On January 23, at UFC 257 the Irish will have the tough commitment of exchanging forces against Dustin poirier, repeating a confrontation from 2014. The winner must be the next challenger for the category belt.
