Stephen Thompson says he wants to win the belt in 2021: 'It's my year'

The welterweight weight (up to 77,1 kg.) Stephen Thompson is willing to wear the category belt in 2021. The North American, who currently occupies fifth place in the rankings, says he is ready for a title fight and also turns his attention to a possible rematch against Jorge masvidal.

“I know I'm (ready) and I hope the UFC is thinking about it. I think I proved it in my last fights against some tough guys. Some rising fighters, like Geoff neal, who was undefeated in Ultimate, and Vincent Luque, who was on a seven-game winning streak. They have to give me someone at the top. I really know I could fight for the title, for sure. 2021 is my year and I'm going to put this belt around my waist”, declared Thompson, in an interview with 'MMA fighting'.

Knowing the need to have another fight before a title fight, Thompson reveals that he would like to face Jorge masvidal for the second time. The fight, which took place in 2017, ended with a victory for 'Wonderboy' in the judges' decision. Furthermore, he left open the possibility of facing the winner of 'Leon Edwards vs. Khamzat Chimaev', which takes place on March 13th.

“I know that the Jorge masvidal I was interested in the rematch a little while ago, before I fought (Kamaru) Usman. He said he wanted to defend the title against me. So I know I'm still in his head. But we will have to see what is happening and the fights that are coming. I also called Edwards for a fight, but he didn't want to. So let's see what happens with these fights that are coming up. Will Masvidal fight Covington? What will happen to Leon edwards and Khamzat (Chimaev)? And, of course, we are all paying attention to the title fight (between Kamaru Usman e Gilbert Durinho), in February”, concluded the fighter.

Stephen Thompson, 37 years old, is coming off a victory against Geoff neal, UFC Las Vegas 17, in December. On that occasion, he beat the North American in a unanimous decision by the judges. In his record, there are 16 triumphs and four setbacks.
