After 17 years of career, Dan Severn announces retirement

The fighter, who is a member of the UFC Hall of Fame, had his last fight as a professional in April 2012

DAN SEVERNAfter 127 fights as a professional, 17 years of career and stints in the main MMA events on the planet, Dan Severn officially announced, on the last day of 2012, his retirement as a professional fighter. In the ad, published on its official website, Severn also states that he tried to hold some fights in recent years to say goodbye, but that was not possible. “I was trying to do my own retirement tour the last few years, coming up with just names: Mark Coleman, Ken Shamrock and Royce gracie …. It seems that these fights will not happen for a few reasons and my life is now moving on to the next chapter,” the 54-year-old fighter said in a statement.

Severn was the winner of the UFC 5 and UFC 7.5 tournaments (or Ultimate Ultimate, as it is also known) and was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame at UFC 52, in 2005. Throughout his career, he competed for the heavyweight belt of the UFC (in a fight in which he ended up defeated by Mark Coleman) and participated in the first edition of PRIDE (in a fight against Kimo Leopoldo, which ended in a draw after the 30-minute timer expired). “The Beast”, as he was known, also fought in WEC, King of the Cage, Cage Rage, RINGS and even pro wrestling in WWE. In his last fight, he beat Alex Rozman at the Blue Blood MMA event (held on April 28, 2012 in Davenport, Iowa), ending his career with 101 wins, 19 losses and 7 draws.
