The year 2020 entered the history of Ultimate – and the world – as the most atypical, as many athletes had to fight without an audience in the arenas. Still, countless fights excited MMA lovers. Therefore, the SUPER FIGHTS prepared a list of the best fights of 2020.
Jon Jones x Dominick Reyes
In a balanced duel, Jon Jones defended the light heavyweight belt (up to 93kg) against Dominick reyes No. UFC 247, which took place in February 2020. Considered an underdog by MMA experts against a legend of the sport, Reyes exceeded expectations and, with aggression, managed to touch 'Bones' in a tense fight. However, the North American's experience made the difference and he retained the title after five rounds.
Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje
Touted as the only fighter who could beat the lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg) Khabib Nurmagomedov, Tony Ferguson was the big favorite in the confrontation against Justin gaethje. At the time, 'El Cucuy' was undefeated in 12 fights, since 2012. However, Justin showed all his technique to not let 'Bicho Papão' put his strategy into play and knocked him out in the fifth round to win the interim title of division.
Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker
In the main fight UFC Las Vegas 4, held in June, Poirier and Hooker lived up to expectations and had an electrifying duel over five rounds in an intense and bloody battle. On that occasion, the 'Diamond' won the unanimous decision of the judges (48-47, 49-46, 48-47).
Deiveson Figueiredo vs Brandon Moreno
Penultimate event of the year, the UFC 256 brought Deiveson Figueiredo e Brandon Moreno in the main fight, which took place on December 13th. The fight was for the flyweight belt (up to 56,7 kg) and ended in a draw after a real battle. By holding the title, the man from Pará continued to be the champion of the division. He also broke the record for saves in a short period of time – 21 days.
Weili Zhang x Joanna Jedrzejczyk
In a duel for the strawweight title (up to 52,1kg), Zhang and Joanna put on a true spectacle at the UFC 248, which occurred in March. Until now, there was still an audience present in Las Vegas (USA), who remained standing at the T-Mobile Arena after the end of the confrontation, considered by many to be the best women's fight in history. After five rounds, Zhang was declared the winner in a split decision by the judges.
