UFC Vegas 15: Anderson Berinja finishes quickly and wins first in UFC

Brazilian, who came from two defeats in Ultimate, managed to recover by landing a fair choke on Martin Day

The only Brazilian representative on the preliminary card of the UFC Las Vegas 15, held this Saturday (28), Anderson Berinja managed a submission in the first round and won an important victory over the North American Martin Day.

This was Berinja's first victory as a UFC athlete, after the Brazilian had been away from the competition for almost 18 months due to a series of injuries, he returned to the most famous octagon in the world with a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

But this didn't seem to affect the jiu-jitsu black belt, who quickly put his ground game into practice and kept his opponent with his back against the ground for practically the entire first round. In the final stretch of the round, Martin Day he reacted, managed to get up, but attacked Berinja's legs carelessly, leaving his neck exposed. Anderson took advantage of the gap, landed a guillotine choke on his rival and, less than 20 seconds later, saw Day withdraw.

After the fight, Berinja commented, in an interview with the official UFC commentator Paul felder, about the difficulties he faced before stepping into the octagon and, mainly, about the importance of the result achieved, as he had been defeated in his first two fights in the biggest MMA organization on the planet.

“I really needed this victory, this wasn't an easy year for me and I'm here to do my best, use my jiu-jitsu and show that Brazilian jiu-jitsu deserves a lot of respect,” he said. “These have been difficult times for me, I had a very serious shoulder injury, the pandemic came, I contracted Covid-19 and I didn't fight for almost a year and a half, but now I'm back, I want to fight next week, month. next time, make up for lost time.”

Analyzing the course of the fight, Berinja said that he was surprised by his opponent's takedown attempt, but that, as a good jiu-jitsu black belt, he couldn't let the opportunity pass by. “I was a little surprised that he went for that double-leg, but what he did was try to take down a jiu-jitsu black belt and, of course, I was going to make him pay for that”, he said.

With the triumph, Anderson Berinja now has a professional record of 21 wins and eight losses as a professional. Already Martin Day, who now has three consecutive setbacks in Ultimate, has eight wins and five losses in his record in mixed martial arts.
