Defeated by Glover Teixeira No. UFC Las Vegas 13, held last Saturday (7), in the United States, Thiago Marreta was harsh when evaluating his performance against his compatriot. “I am totally disappointed and embarrassed by my performance. I didn't do anything I trained for. I stopped, I wasn't the fighter I am. I apologize to my coaches and team, and thank you for all your efforts. You guys are awesome. Thank you to everyone who is always by my side. I'm sorry for disappointing you this time”, wrote Marreta, on his 'Instagram' account.
The duel against Glover had a special flavor for Thiago. In addition to being selected for a confrontation that could place him once again as a challenger for the light heavyweight title (up to 93kg), Marreta was making his return to the Octagon after more than a year. The athlete has spent the last few months recovering from serious knee injuries suffered in the clash against Jon Jones, in July 2019.
Disregarding the clash against Jones, in UFC 239, valid for the group's belt, the meeting with Teixeira marked Thiago's first defeat since the representative of Cidade de Deus debuted in the category. Having debuted in the category in September 2018, Marreta, today, has five commitments in the division, with two setbacks and three positive results – the last one, including, over the current champion, Jan Blachowicz.
With the defeat, Thiago should lose his number one ranking to Glover. Before the confrontation, the Minas Gerais player was in third place.
