Olympic, world and Pan-American medalists are confirmed at the event, which takes place in Uberlândia-MG, starting at 9 am. Selective will have
live broadcast on SporTV For 27 athletes, the dream of participating in the Olympic Games will continue to exist, or not, after the National Olympic Trial, which takes place this Saturday (24/11) in Uberlandia-MG, starting at 9am at the Tancredo municipal gym Neves, Sabiazinho.
The winners of the qualifier, which will take place in the best of three matches, join the athletes who represented Brazil in the 2007 World Championship.
SporTV (Net/Sky channel 39) broadcasts the competition live.
Olympic, world and Pan-American medalists are confirmed in
Selective, like Flávio Canto (bronze at the 2004 Athens Games), Carlos
Honorato (Silver at the 2000 Sydney Games), Mário Sabino (Bronze at the 2003 World Cup), Daniel Hernandes (Gold at the Santo Domingo 2003 Pan) and Vânia Ishii (Gold at the 1999 Winnipeg Pan).
“It will be 'the' Selective. After everything I've been through this year, such as being left out of the Pan American Games and the World Cup, I'm very calm and without any injuries for this challenge”, says Vânia Ishii, who was at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games. .
Another experienced judoka who sees the Selective as decisive is Mário Sabino. In his fifth Olympic cycle, Sabino already has in mind what he will do depending on the result he achieves this Saturday.
“I’m 35 years old and this is my last Olympic cycle. In other words, if I lose, I will say goodbye to the team with the certainty that I did my part. It's very gratifying to see the level the light heavyweight has reached. This is the most awarded category in the history of Brazilian judo and with Luciano Correa in great form, all athletes tend to evolve to be able to keep up with him”, says Mário Sabino.
His opponent in the race for the position, Rio de Janeiro native Leonardo Leite, agrees:
“The level is high and having competed in the Team World Cup gave me a good rhythm. Mário is an experienced fighter, but I have been preparing for this qualifier for a long time.”
In his second competition after the injury suffered at the Pan American Games, Flávio Canto confesses that he feels a mix of anxiety and worry.
“I'm still in the readaptation phase and I'm aware that I'm not 100% physically and technically. This Qualifier is very important, as it is worth the chance to continue dreaming about the Beijing Olympic Games. It won't be easy, since Felipe Braga also has his dreams and should be at the best moment of his career”, says Flávio Canto.
There will be no competition in the women's heavyweight category. Athlete Aline Puglia is automatically classified, as Viviane Oliveira withdrew from the selection process. Among the men's middleweights (-90kg), three athletes are fighting for two places. Of the 14 Olympic categories, two already have the athlete's name guaranteed for the Games: men's and women's light-weight, with João Derly and Érika Miranda.
The two athletes met the criteria stipulated by the technical committee of the Brazilian Judo Confederation. Derly was champion of the 2007 Pan American Games and 2007 World Champion, and Érika took silver at the Pan and was fifth at the World Championship.
