After seven years, Lyoto Machida reunites with Phil Davis, but denies feeling revenge

When he was playing for the UFC, the Brazilian was defeated in a dubious way, but he warned that the controversy was in the past

Seven years. That was the time that Lyoto Machida waited to settle accounts with Phil Davis and the fight will take place at Bellator 245, an event that will take place on Friday (11), in the USA. However, the Brazilian is not going to the new meeting with his tormentor wanting to take revenge for the controversial defeat suffered in his country, when they were still working in the UFC.

In the pre-fight press conference, 'The Dragon', who returns to light heavyweight (93kg), analyzed the new duel, believes that his opponent will use the same strategy that made him successful in the past, praised him, but revealed who will propose the fight and plans to win the quick way.

“Bellator offered me this fight. I've never had the feeling of revenge in my life. For me, what's gone is gone. My head is fine about that. Davis is a good fight for me. We've been fighting for seven years and a lot has changed. Of course he will try to take me down. He likes to score, control the fight and my job is not to let him get comfortable. I'm going to look for the fight from the beginning and I intend to knockout or submit. A fight is a fight and I don't have just any opponent. Davis is a former Bellator champion. I have to do my best and be prepared for any situation”, said Lyoto.

A veteran of the sport, Lyoto, 42 years old, reported that he still feels good and will only retire when his goal becomes a reality.

“I'm prepared, I had a great training camp and I'm looking forward to this fight. I'm lucky that I haven't suffered a lot of injuries and damage throughout my career. I don't have an expiration date. Of course I won't fight for long, but I still want to fight, challenge myself. I have goals and, when I achieve them, I will retire”, he informed.

Everything indicates that the winner of the main fight at Bellator 245 will be the light heavyweight challenger, as Scott Coker, president of the organization, and Vadim nemkov, champion of the category, mentioned the importance of the duel, even so, the Brazilian minimized the fact, as his focus is on beating Davis.

“Nemkov did very well against Bader. He's young, he's growing in Bellator, but I don't pay attention to that. My focus is on beating Davis. One thing at a time. Bellator wants the winner of this fight to be the challenger, but that's not my priority. I have a big obstacle in front of me, a battle, because Davis is a great fighter, complete. I don’t want to think about the future,” he concluded.

Lyoto Machida, former UFC light heavyweight champion, signed with Bellator in 2018 and fought three fights for the organization, winning two and losing one. The revenge against Phil Davis will mark his return to the category in which he shone in the past. The Brazilian's last appearance was in the defeat against Gegard Mousasi, its rival, in September 2019.
