It didn't work for the Brazilian. In the main fight of UFC Las Vegas 9, held this Saturday (5), Augusto Sakai tried, but was unable to overcome the experienced alistair overeem. After a good start to the fight, the man from Pará ended up succumbing to the strength of the Dutchman, who won by knockout in the last round.

Taking the lead role on an Ultimate card for the first time, Sakai arrived for the match ready to win to get closer to a title fight in the heavyweight division (up to 120,2kg). The athlete, however, ended up having his dream postponed after losing to the veteran.
In addition to not being able to reach the top 5 in the category, the setback for Overeem interrupted the Brazilian's undefeated streak in the UFC, which he had not lost since his debut in the organization.
At 40 years old, Alistair showed that he can still perform well against high-level opponents and continues with his dream of winning the Ultimate belt, which today belongs to Stipe Miocic. With the triumph, the Dutchman reached his second consecutive victory in the organization.
The fight
The athletes began the confrontation studying each other in the center of the Octagon. Overeem took the initiative with a series of punches, which stopped in the Brazilian's guard. Augusto responded with a kick to the Dutchman's waistline. After two minutes, Sakai attacked Alistair and shook his opponent with punches and jabs. Overeem grabbed the Paraná native, but the Brazilian managed to move away. Overeem connected with a powerful cross to Augusto's face, who almost fell, but the man from Pará walked forward again afterwards. In the final seconds, Sakai pressured the Dutchman again with a series of punches, but there was no more time.
The Brazilian returned to the confrontation ready to knock him out. In the first minute, the man from Pará promoted a new blitz on the Dutchman, but Overeem responded with a series of punches. The duel remained tense with the combatants trying to end the dispute. Augusto started throwing punches again and the Dutchman tried to defend himself. Overeem grabbed the Brazilian again and pressed him against the fence. Alistair managed to surprise the Brazilian with a cross, but Sakai showed a lot of resistance to absorb the blows. In the final seconds, the athletes grabbed each other again, but the timer ran to zero.
In the third stage, Sakai started attacking with a combination of punches. The attack was responded to by the Dutchman with a kick to the belt. The Brazilian continued walking forward and tried to intimidate his rival. After two minutes, Augusto managed to attack Overeem with a sequence. The Dutchman raised his guard and absorbed the attacks from Paraná well. The Brazilian managed to connect with a low kick, which knocked his opponent off balance. The Dutchman seemed to feel the blow and returned to grappling. Almost at the end of the round, Alistair managed to get a good takedown on the Brazilian and found himself in an advantageous position. Sakai tried to protect himself, but the Dutchman tried to gain half guard. In the final seconds, Alistair began throwing hammer blows, which opened a cut on the Paraná native's face. The bell sounded with an advantage for the veteran.
Overeem started the fourth round by throwing a series of jabs. Sakai responded in kind. Augusto managed to frame the Dutchman against the bars and throw a combination of punches. Alistair defended himself, but managed to move away. Halfway through the round, the confrontation was interrupted after a kick to the genitals from Alistair. The fight returned with the heavyweights accepting the frank exchange. Afterwards, the Dutchman managed to get a takedown again and attacked the Brazilian from top to bottom. The Paraná native tried to protect himself, but the advantage belonged to the veteran. The Brazilian tried to free himself from his opponent, but the situation was not good for the Paraná native. Overeem continued to punish the Brazilian, who tried to resist. Alistair didn't give up trying for the knockout, but the Paraná native ended up saved by the bell.
In the last round, Overeem immediately managed to take down the Brazilian. With a series of elbows, the Dutchman massacred the Paraná native and the referee interrupted the confrontation.
