Edmen Shahbazyan speaks out after first defeat in his career: 'It's part of the game'

Defeated by Derek Brunson at UFC Las Vegas 5, middleweight promise shows maturity in dealing with tough setback suffered last Saturday

Considered one of the great promises for the future of middleweights in Ultimate, Edmen shahbazyan manifested itself for the first time after the tough defeat to Derek Brunson last Saturday (1), at UFC Las Vegas 5. In a text published on his social networks, the American showed maturity when commenting on the setback and promised a better performance upon his return to the Octagon.

“I'm fine, guys. I just needed to get a few stitches. Thanks for all the messages. Love you. Congratulations to Derek Brunson tonight. He did a great job. No excuses. It’s part of the game and I’ll be back,” wrote Shahbazyan.

Pupil of the former bantamweight champion (up to 61,2 kg.), Edmen, who had an impeccable record since his debut in professional MMA, faced the toughest challenge of his career to date. In the confrontation against the experienced Brunson, however, the 22-year-old was unable to repeat the great performances that earned him the label of prodigy and ended up succumbing to his rival with a hard knockout at the beginning of the third round.

In a press conference given by the organization's president, Dana White, after the UFC Las Vegas 5, the 'big boss' assured that Shahbazian's pride was not changed after the defeat.

“I was not disappointed. Everyone knew he would face an extremely experienced guy”, said the agent when referring to Derek.

Now, with one defeat on his record, Edmen has 12 appearances in mixed martial arts. The fighter has 11 victories and one setback. For Ultimate, Shahbazyan achieved four positive results in five appearances.
