Linear lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg.), Khabib Nurmagomedov spoke out for the first time after the death of his father, Abdulmanap, victim of complications from COVID-19. “I’ll miss you, Dad. You were at the same time a father, friend, brother and coach. It taught me almost everything I know. I hope you were happy with me. The contentment of the family is the contentment of Allah”, wrote the Russian.
Khabib, who is Muslim, also took the opportunity to share a passage from the Quran. In an excerpt translated by Samir El Hayek and released by 'Combate', the UFC champion used verses 23 and 24 of the 17th Surah to record his feelings.
“The decree of your Lord is that you worship none but Him; may you be indulgent towards your parents, even if old age overtakes one or both of them, in your company; Do not reprove them or reject them; Furthermore, I spoke honorable words to them. And spread the wing of humility over them, and say: O my Lord, have mercy on them both, as they had mercy on me, raising me from a young age”, published Nurmagomedov.
There is still no information about Khabib's future within MMA. With his father as a mentor and leader, the athlete rose to stardom in the sport and, today, is one of the main names in Ultimate. Before the personal tragedy, the Russian was negotiating a confrontation against the current interim champion, Justin gaethje, for September. Abdulmanap's death, however, may have delayed the settlement.
