The Brazilian José Aldo has a new opponent in the main fight of UFC Rio 3, an event that takes place on October 13th, in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian athlete was initially scheduled to face Erik Koch, but the American suffered an injury and is out of action. In his place, the show's organizers acted quickly and called up the former champion Frankie Edgar, who recently announced his departure from the lightweight category to the featherweight division, with an eye on a possible duel against José Aldo.
The information was released first hand by the newspaper USA Today, which soon afterwards spoke with UFC president, Dana White. The manager admitted that he was disappointed to learn of Koch's injury. However, a call to Edgar quickly resulted in a turn for the better.
“Obviously, we've had a rough two weeks here at the UFC (due to the cancellation of UFC 151), and sure enough, when I get to work I find out that Erik is injured,” said Dana. "But Frankie Edgar, being the star and warrior that he is, he intensified his training and accepts this fight”, he added.
