Durinho reports 'climb' when meeting Usman at the gym before UFC 251: 'It was strange'

The episode took place before the welterweight champion made his team change official; Brazilian, however, states that the approach between the two was friendly and made predictions for the confrontation on July 11

Challenger for the UFC welterweight (up to 77kg) belt, on July 11, Gilbert Durinho reported an unusual episode, when he met his next opponent, Kamaru Usman at a gym in Florida (USA). The episode happened before the category champion made his team change official. Despite being strange, the Brazilian stated that the atmosphere was friendly between the two.

“On Monday (8), after the Las Vegas card that my brother (Herbert Burns) fought, I met him at the gym. He stayed here that week and then went to Colorado (USA) to finish his training. We talked and it was peaceful. He said: 'Let's fight, leave everything in the octagon and then we'll have a beer together'. It's going to be very professional”, said Gilbert in an interview with 'MMA Fighting'.

Despite having already publicly declared that he maintains a friendly relationship with the champion – with whom he trained together for years – the Brazilian did not hide his surprise at meeting his next rival in the preparation environment for the confrontation.

“I was surprised when I saw him, but I thought, 'He's here. Cool. Let's talk today'. It was even better than when he was training there, actually. I knew he would show up at the gym, but I didn't know when. It was a little strange, but peaceful”, reported Durinho.

Finally, Gilbert did not hide his plans for the challenge against the Nigerian. The athlete hopes that the confrontation will not go to the judges' decision and intends to end the fight with a knockout or submission.

“I’m going there to knockout or submit. It's going to be a war. I think Kamaru is tougher than (Tyron) Woodley and Demian (Maia), my last two fights. I had a great performance, but Kamaru is a different person and I think it will be more difficult to knock out or submit”, concluded the Brazilian.
