After surprising the world and announcing his retirement from MMA after crashing Dominick Cruz No. UFC 249, on May 9, Henry Cejudo he is no longer listed as bantamweight champion (up to 61,2kg) in the official Ultimate rankings. The organization chose to remove the North American from the list of combatants and now has two vacant belts. The information is available on the company's website.
It all started when Cejudo, after another great victory in his career, stated that he was fed up after a lifetime dedicated to competitions. Even with a tone of sincerity, several specialized vehicles and fans believed that everything was nothing more than a 'marketing ploy' by 'Triplo C' to be more valued within the company.
When asked about Cejudo's decision, the organization's president, Dana White, shortly after the UFC 249, did not criticize the former champion and limited himself to saying that he supports Henry's speech.
“In this sport, when you start thinking about retiring, maybe it’s the best thing to do,” said the president at a press conference on May 9th.
White also advanced his plans and stated that, if Cejudo's decision is final, the first name for a title fight will be that of Petr yan, currently number three in the rankings, undefeated in the UFC and who has not lost in nine appearances. The Russian's possible opponents would be Marlon moraes, aljamain sterling e José Aldo.
In addition to removing Cejudo's belt, Ultimate also excluded the former bantamweight champion from the organization's weight-for-pound rankings.
