One of the most notable Brazilians in the history of Brazilian MMA, Demian Maia is close to carrying out his 'final act' within the sport. The São Paulo native, who has been stating that he intends to make one more performance before hanging up his gloves, seems to have found the right opponent for the occasion. Challenged by Maia, Diego Sanchez has been talking excitedly about a possible duel and even suggested a confrontation on 'Ilha da Luta'.

At 42 years old, Demian has proven, over the years, to have been one of the most successful athletes in the history of MMA in the migration from jiu-jitsu to mixed martial arts. With 38 appearances and just 10 defeats, the Brazilian is highly respected in the sport, having even challenged for the UFC belt on two occasions.

Also experienced, Diego, 38, has 42 commitments in the sport. The athlete has 30 triumphs and 12 setbacks since his debut in the sport.

The American is far from the peak of his career. There are five wins in their last 10 appearances.

The athlete is coming off a controversial victory over Michael Pereira, the 'Paraense Voador', in combat held in February this year. On that occasion, Sanchez emerged victorious after being the victim of an illegal knee from the Brazilian. In the episode, Diego chose to give up continuing in the confrontation, in which he had been dominated for three rounds, until the moment of the incident.

There is still no confirmation on when 'Ilha da Luta' will be ready to receive athletes and shows. According to Dana White, the location is expected to be fully adapted in May.

The 'Fight Island'

Since the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began to scare the world, causing thousands of deaths, the suspension of sporting events ended up being inevitable. The UFC ended up being forced to give in to pressure and, like other organizations, chose to halt its activities.

Thinking about alternatives, the company's president, Dana White, decided to adapt a private space to hold his shows so that the government cannot influence decisions on site.

PUBLICITY:

After making the postponement of the UFC 249, which would take place on April 18, and the following events, Dana stated that 'Ilha da Luta' is a real project and that the company is working tirelessly to make it ready to resume the calendar.
