Coach rules out McGregor's participation in UFC 249: 'No chance'

John Kavanagh says McGregor is engaged in the fight against coronavirus in Ireland and has not done any training to face Ferguson

With the eventual departure of Khabib Nurmagomedov do UFC 249, the strongest name to replace the Russian and face Tony Ferguson in the attraction would be Conor McGregor. The Irishman, former featherweight (up to 65.7 kg) and lightweight (up to 70.3 kg) champion, would manage to keep the card attractive and still guarantee a lot of pay-per-view sales. However, the Notório coach guarantees that the duel should not happen.

John Kavanagh, McGregor's head coach, says that his pupil is engaged in the campaign to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ireland and should not accept the fight at this time.

“No chance (of accepting the fight). Ireland is in a strict lockdown (everything closed). Conor and I don't have physical interactions. There are no physical interactions in the gym. They are closed,” Kavanagh said in a live on US ESPN Twitter.

Last week, McGregor released part of his training in Ireland. Alone, the Irishman showed his ability to strike and dodge a bar. But, according to the coach, the training has nothing to do with the possibility of replacing Khabib in the UFC 249.

O UFC 249 is scheduled to take place on April 18th, with no location yet defined. Initially the attraction would take place in New York. but with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the city, the attraction must have its location changed. The greatest chances are of it happening in Florida or Abu Dhabi.

The main fight of the attraction would be between Khabib Nurmagomedov x Tony Ferguson. But the Russian refused to fight due to the pandemic. In addition to McGregor, the name of Justin gaethje was speculated for the duel. However, on Friday (03), Khabib backtracked and said he would fight Ferguson at UFC 249.
