Deiveson Figueiredo fails in weight cut and loses chance to win belt

It will not be this time that Brazil will have a male champion in Ultimate again. One of the protagonists of the main fight of the UFC Norfolk, which takes place this Saturday (29), Deiveson Figueiredo exceeded the flyweight limit (up to 56,7kg.) by just over 1kg and will not be able to leave the octagon with the belt in the fight against Joseph Benavidez. The fight was maintained, but only the North American could win the title. The weigh-in ended early this Friday afternoon (28).

The Brazilian tension began when most of the athletes had already passed the scale and Deiveson did not show up to count. In his first attempt, the man from Pará weighed 57,8kg, around 1kg above the limit required in title fights.

The evaluation committee then gave the athlete one more hour so he could lose the rest. After approximately 30 minutes, it was announced that Deiveson had officially given up trying to reach the weight limit for the category and would therefore give up on seeking the title. The fight, however, was maintained. In addition to the chance to win the belt, the person from Pará will lose 30% of the value of their scholarship.

At 35 years old, Benavidez was one of the first athletes to make weight. The North American, who will be fighting for the third title in his career, weighed 56,4kg, around 300g below what was determined by the organization.

Another representative from Brazil, Gabriel Silva did not disappoint. The athlete, who is making his second fight for Ultimate and looking for his first victory, weighed 61,4kg, the same as his opponent, Kyler Phillips, and guaranteed the fight in the bantamweight division valid for the preliminary card of the show.

Ultimate debutant, Norm Dumont, who will make his debut in the organization, weighed 66,2kg, using the pound tolerance. The Brazilian stares Megan anderson, who scored 65,8kg., in a featherweight duel.

More weight cutting failure

In addition to Figueiredo, the UFC Norfolk featured yet another failure by one of the athletes on the card. Representative of featherweights (up to 65,7kg.), Grant dawson he exceeded the limit by more than 2kg for the fight against Derrick Minner, who weighed 65,9kg. The athlete will also have part of his scholarship passed on to his rival.
