After being successful in European events, Klidson Abreu arrived in the UFC bearing the nickname 'Terror of the Russians'. In the biggest MMA organization in the world, however, the Brazilian has still not managed to live up to his fame. This Saturday (9), in the first fight on the main card of the UFC Moscow, the Brazilian light heavyweight (up to 93kg), despite having the best moments of the fight, was surpassed by the local debutant Shamil Gamzatov, who defeated him by split decision from the judges (29×28, 28×29, 29×28).

This was Klidson's second setback in three fights at home, all in 2019: before, he lost to the also Russian Magomed Ankalayev and overcame Sam alvey, both by points. Gamzatov, in turn, maintained 100% success in his professional record, with 14 victories.

The fight

Klidson started by cornering Gamzatov, who was trying to surprise with kicks to the waist. Cautious, the two fighters did not attack much as they circulated around the Octagon. After two minutes, Abreu threw a flying knee, but it went empty. The Russian tried to land a high kick, but the Brazilian responded in kind. Both loosened up more in the final minute, throwing more blows, but with no effectiveness for either side.

The second stage started more hectic, with Klidson seeking the initiative in the fight. Gamzatov, appearing tired, tried to respond only with counterattacks. The Brazilian started to have a small advantage in the duel, connecting clean blows to his rival's face. By moving a lot, Klidson made it difficult for Gamzatov, who was unable to keep up with the pace of the fight. With 40 seconds left, the Brazilian fell and landed on top, but was unable to work on the ground.

Aware of the disadvantage, Gamzatov came back looking for more of the fight, surrounding the Brazilian, who was moving intelligently, scoring with strong low kicks to the outside of the leg. Pushed by the fans, the Russian began to grow in the dispute, but was stopped by the Brazilian's gridiron game, which cooled down the actions until the timer ran out.

Khabib Nurmagomedov's cousin debuts with defeat

The main highlight of the preliminary portion of the UFC Moscow it was the welterweight debut Abubakar Nurmagomedov, cousin of the lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Despite having a fighting style very similar to that of his family's star, the outcome for the Russian was not good. Widely favored by bookmakers, Abubakar was submitted by the German David Zawada at 2m50s of the first, to the frustration of the fans present in the arena. Khabib, who was in his corner, did not hide his dejection at the setback.
