'Are you in trouble? Call to Gilbert Durinho!' The Brazilian, who had already saved UFC Montevideo in August, was hastily called up for UFC Copenhagen, with just 15 days left until the show. And, even with no preparation time, the Tupiniquim black belt fought a tough battle and beat Icelandic Gunnar Nelson in a unanimous decision by the judges (29-28, 29-28 29-28).

With the result, Durinho has the second victory in his career since moving up from lightweight (up to 70,3 kg) to the welterweight division (up to 77,1 kg) and is already dreaming of a place in the top-15 of the category. On the other hand, the Icelandic, who was coming from behind against Leon edwards, in March, suffered the second consecutive defeat.

“I came to welterweight to stay! I want Neil Magny on December 14th! Let’s go”, challenged the Brazilian, still in the octagon, asking for a duel against the North American in the UFC 245, in Las Vegas (USA).

The fight

Nelson started the fight controlling the distance. Based on karateka, the Icelander worked with good straight blows, while Durinho needed to walk forward in search of hitting his rival. Gunnar still finished the partial on top, when Gilbert tried to take him down, but ended up falling on the bottom.

Durinho's comeback began in the second round. The Icelander connected his best blows while standing, pressing the Brazilian against the bars. However, Nelson attempted the takedown on two occasions, all well defended. In the second attack, Gilbert landed a beautiful knee strike. Gunnar insisted on the takedown, but it was Durinho who took him down with a judo takedown.

In the third round, Nelson continued working on the clinch game, pressing Durinho against the bars. The Icelander controlled the fight in the final minute, Durinho released his grip, connected with a good right punch and took down his rival. The Tupiniquim black belt went to the back, but lost the position.
