Cormier confirms rematch with Miocic and guarantees: 'Win or lose, it will be the last'

Former heavyweight champion says he will step into the Octagon to try to regain his title, lost in August; there is speculation that the fight could take place at UFC 245, in December

Just over a month. This was the time needed for the former heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg.) to recover and admit his desire to have a final fight against Stipe Miocic. After being defeated by his compatriot in August last month, at UFC 241, DC, who had not yet commented on whether he would like to have a rematch, expressed his desire to have a third fight against Stipe. The statement was made in an interview with Ariel Helwani this Monday (23).

“I'm going to fight this guy (Stipe Miocic) again. My intention is to fight him the right way. Hopefully, that’s enough to get my hand raised,” Cormier said.

The 40-year-old athlete, however, confirmed that, as soon as the date and location are confirmed, he will also have confirmed the moment of his official retirement from MMA. Daniel has, for some time, revealed his desire to abandon his career at the age of 40, which turned out at the beginning of this year.

“Win or lose, I’m not going to fight anymore (after the rematch). This will be the last time I set foot in an Octagon,” said DC.

The heavyweight, in a recent interview, also stated that he would not like to be an example of a fighter who retires on a low. Making it seem like his peak wasn't so valuable. There are several cases of athletes trying to face time and remain active in their careers, but the results, in some situations, are catastrophic.

By saying that the match against Stipe will be his last, Cormier practically eliminates any possibility of achieving the dream match against Jon Jones, his eternal rival. The defeat to Miocic seems to have focused Daniel's attention only on his latest tormentor, leaving aside the disagreements with 'Bones'.

“The next one will be the last. It has to be Stipe. Nobody matters anymore”, concluded DC.

The first time he shared the octagon with Miocic, Cormier had no difficulty delivering a devastating knockout to his opponent. It took less than five minutes for the belt to change hands.

A little more than a year later, when they returned to thunder, the situation had changed a little. Cormier still showed some superiority over his opponent, but, however, in the fourth round, Stipe managed to change his combat strategy in the middle of the duel and managed to recover from three lost rounds and return the knockout suffered in UFC 226.

The third fight would, in fact, define who would deserve the throne of best heavyweight at the moment.
