The paths are open for Dustin poirier. After being beaten by Khabib Nurmagomedovov in a fight valid for the unification of the UFC lightweight (up to 70,3kg) belt, in the UFC 242, the North American, who even considered early retirement from the sport, now appears to have expanded his prospects for the future. After challenging Conor McGregor for a rematch, in response to a fan on Twitter, the fighter stated that, with the right fight, he could move up a category and play at welterweight (up to 77kg.). The publication was made on his Twitter account.

Currently, the lightweight division is considered by many MMA experts as one of the most dangerous in Ultimtate due to the large number of talents that have been emerging in recent times. As great champion, the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov remains with the title after making his second title defense against Poirier himself.

Without an immediate chance for a rematch, Dustin suggested a rematch against Conor McGregor, by whom he was defeated in 2014 in a clash that ended before the opening two minutes. The Irishman, who has not played since October last year, initially rejected the proposal, claiming that the duel between the two had been too easy.

At the top of the category, the possible opponents for the 'Diamond' are keeping an eye on the fight between Tony Ferguson and Nurmagomedov, which, according to president Dana White, is the closest thing to happening. Fourth and fifth in the ranking (Justin gaethje e Donald Cerrone) faced each other recently and will possibly no longer play in 2019.

The possibility, then, of Poirier accepting a fight in the category that is currently dominated by Kamaru Usman cannot be completely ruled out. Recently, Nate diaz he joined the division after returning to MMA, ending a three-year hiatus. The North American hit Anthony Pettis and soon took sixth place in the category. The 'Bad Boy' will now have a new commitment against Jorge masvidal, current number three. A win could put Nate in a good position to fight for the belt in the near future.

Dustin could try to follow in his compatriot's footsteps and seek a confrontation against an athlete from the top category. It remains for the athlete to confirm his desire and report it to Ultimate. If the migration happens, this would be the third division in which Poirier would venture since signing a contract with Ultimate. The athlete made his debut in the company playing at featherweight (up to 65,7kg.)
