The lightweight division (up to 70,3kg) continues to be one of the most exciting in the UFC. With great athletes at the top of the category, several fights could be combined and promote epic events to fans. One of them, a meeting between Tony Ferguson e Justin gaethje. In a recent post on his official Twitter account, the welterweight (up to 77kg) suggested to Ultimate a clash between the two fighters. Justin promptly responded positively to the suggestion.

With each match, Justin gains more recognition within the organization. In his last fight, in March of this year, for UFC Philadelphia, the athlete beat Brazilian Edson Barbosa in a confrontation in which many believed in his defeat. After the triumph, the fighter jumped to fifth place in the division rankings, behind Donald Cerrone, Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson, in addition to the champions, Dustin poirier e Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Recently, the North American even challenged the Irishman Conor McGregor for a confrontation. However, the former champion seems not to have been interested in putting his game into practice against Justin.

The fight against Ferguson may also not be interesting for 'El Cucuy', as the Ultimate management revealed that the winner of the fight between Tony and Cerrone would be accredited to fight for the category's belt after the dispute between Poirier and Nurmagomedov, who are in September for the unification of the title.

The news is going around behind the scenes that Tony would only return to the Octagon if he faced McGregor in a fight that would make a lot of money for all parties. Other than that, the ideal scenario for Ferguson would be to wait for the winner of the UFC 242 and carry out their long-awaited fight for the linear belt of the division.

Gaethje, however, has found it difficult to find an opponent who favors him in the category ranking. The fighter has shown himself to be very dangerous and has already confirmed his desire to face an athlete within the top 5. Disregarding the champions and Ferguson, only Conor and Donald remain as strategically important opponents for a clash.

Gaethje debuted in Ultimate in 2017, with a victory over his compatriot Michael Johnson. After five commitments for the organization, the 30-year-old American has three wins and two losses in his professional MMA career.
