Jon Jones reduces his chance of fighting Daniel Cormier at heavyweight: 'He would have an advantage in strength'

In an atypical moment, 'Bones' praises his eternal rival and minimizes the possibility of facing the athlete in the top category

The current light heavyweight champion and eternal rival of Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, reduced the expectations of those who imagined a chance to see the two fighters sharing the Octagon again. In a recent interview with 'BT Sport', 'Bones' surprisingly praised the rival and explained why a new duel between the two would be complicated. DC recently stated that they would love to have a third fight.

“He says this (that he would love to do a trilogy), but there is no chance of him returning to light heavyweight (up to 93kg). Subjecting himself to losing so much weight would be devastating for him. That would take a lot of courage and I doubt he would do it again,” commented Jones.

Currently, Daniel is the current holder of the heavyweight title (up to 120,2kg.). Jon's statement makes sense when you think about Cormier's reasons for giving up his title just to try for something that was once taken from him.

Another case to think about, however, would be 'Bones' move to heavyweight, where his rival has reigned since July last year, when he defeated Stipe Miocic in a duel valid for the category belt. Regarding the possibility, Jon was categorical and showed humility when commenting on his chances of winning the top category.

"I am realistic. DC is a special athlete and anyone can be beaten. I believe my biggest chance of being defeated is to a guy like Daniel Cormier. It would be giving him the advantage of strength, and that doesn’t make sense,” commented Jones.

The light heavyweight champion also commented on what fans would think of his statement, but said he was just being realistic.

“At light heavyweight I can fight on equal terms. So, it doesn't make sense for me to face someone technically equal to me and give him an advantage. I won't do that. I know my fans wouldn’t like to hear me say that, but I’m just being realistic”, reported the athlete.

Whether he fights or not, Cormier already has his next commitment scheduled for Ultimate. After frustrated negotiations for a duel against the WWE star, Brock Lesnar, the company acted quickly and announced the rematch of Stipe Miocic against Daniel for the heavyweight belt. The duel will take place on August 17th at UFC 241. Regarding the clash, Jones gave his opinion and revealed DC's favoritism.

“I think Miocic will have a better fight than the first, but I believe Daniel will win again. He is an extraordinary athlete. His agility and speed for a man of his size make no sense”, commented Jon. “I think the only way to beat Cormier is a knockout, which Stipe has the strength to accomplish. The question is: will he do it?', asked 'Bones'.

If Ultimate finds the marriage of a third duel interesting, the directors will have to act quickly. Cormier has stated in several interviews that he does not wish to continue fighting after his 40s. The athlete turned his age in March, but needed to extend his career a little longer due to an injury that made him unable to perform at the beginning of the year. With a fight in August, the athlete would have until the end of the year for a new encounter against his last and only tormentor.
