Defenders of the use of marijuana in sport won an important victory this weekend. WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) announced that cannabidiol (CBD) will be removed from the list of banned substances from 2018. The substance makes up around 40% of marijuana extract and is sold in oil form in US states where it medicinal use of the product is permitted.

“Cannabinoids will no longer be banned. Synthetic cannabidiol is not a cannabimimetic. However, cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants may also contain different concentrations of THC, which remains a prohibited substance,” the agency wrote on its website. As a result, the use of marijuana in the form of cigarettes remains prohibited during the competition period.

In August 2016, after the rematch against Conor McGregor, Nate diaz went to the UFC 202 press conference with a vaporizer that contained CBD oil. The fighter, who lives in California where the use of cannabis is permitted, declared that he has a license to use the drug medicinally.

At the time, the fighter, who had taken a doping test minutes earlier in the locker room, was warned by USADA (the US anti-doping agency that regulates UFC athletes), but was not punished.
