The first Ultimate event in Rio de Janeiro since August 2015, UFC 212 ended on a sour note for Brazilian fans. The knockout defeat of José Aldo for Max Holloway in the main fight meant that Brazil once again had just one belt in the event, held by the bantamweight Amanda nunes. The Bahian defends her throne in the next numbered event, UFC 213, on July 8.

Belfort beats Marquardt and avoids retirement: 'Five more fights'

In the main attraction of UFC 212, Aldo started well and even stunned Holloway on more than one occasion during the first round. The Hawaiian grew stronger as the fight progressed and, in the third round, landed a solid blow to the Brazilian's chin. “Scarface” was a warrior, he resisted as long as he could, but ended up being knocked out.

In the second most important fight of the night, however, Brazil walked. Number one in the strawweight rankings, Claudia Gadelha showed that she is truly one of the greatest fighters in the universe by dominating Karolina Kowalkiewicz, second place in the scoring up to 52 kg. With a perfect game plan, Claudinha was superior on her feet, put Karolina down and soon submitted her – all in the first round.

UFC 212 also had the return of Vitor belfort to the win column. With a fierce performance, the former light heavyweight champion overcame difficulties in the first round, when he spent a long time on his back to the ground, to win by unanimous decision against Nate Marquardt. It was the first victory in the hands of the side judges for the Phenomenon since 2007.
