One of the biggest soap operas in MMA history will gain another chapter next week. The assembly of the state of New York, the only one of the 50 that make up the USA in which the practice of mixed martial arts professionally is illegal, set a new date to vote on the project that regulates the sport.

The very fact that the project goes to a vote is already quite a victory, since over the last seven years the UFC has tried insistently, and invested millions of dollars in LOBBY, but the proposal to legalize MMA in the state always ends up rejected before it even goes to state legislators for consideration.

To be approved, the proposal needs 76 votes in favor among the members of the New York assembly, a number that has been considered probable by the North American specialized press – due to the political and ideological alignment of the majority of representatives of the state legislature.

The UFC had even announced a major event for April at the legendary Madison Square Garden as a way of pressuring the assembly to take a favorable stance on the project in early 2016, but it was blocked before it could even be voted on. The expectation is that the gym, home of the New York Knicks and historic stage for international boxing, will be announced as the venue for an Ultimate card immediately after the eventual legalization of MMA in New York.
