After beating Aldo and winning the featherweight title (up to 66 kg), McGregor moved up a category to originally face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title (70 kg) at UFC 196. However, the Brazilian was injured and was replaced by Nate diaz. The new fight took place between welterweights (up to 77 kg).

McGregor punished Diaz's face for a round and a half, which caused a large cut over the American's eye. However, in the second round, Diaz landed good blows on a more tired McGregor, which made the Irishman “wobble” his legs. The Irishman tried to take the fight to the ground, but fell underneath, and was submitted shortly after.
