Increasingly a refuge for athletes who left Ultimate, the World Series of Fighting Last weekend saw the debut of another former UFC athlete. In the main fight of WSOF 14, the North American Jake Shields beat Canadian Ryan Ford by submission in just over four minutes and has already asked for a title fight in the welterweight category in an interview given at the cage.
Despite the triumph at 4:29 of the first round, Shields went through difficult moments in the initial stretch of the fight in Edmonton (Canada). In the first moments of the fight, the North American suffered a tough knockdown of the opponent, but managed to reverse the situation, take the fight to the ground and manage to land a rear naked choke that put an end to the fight, and secure his eleventh submission in his career.
If Shields' wish is granted and he is the next to fight for the WSOF under-77 kg division title, the former Strikeforce champion will face another UFC veteran, as the belt will be put on the line the next day. December 13th, when Rousimar Toquinho and Jon Fitch, both with experience in the Octagon, duel at WSOF 16.
Smealinho Rama wins inaugural heavyweight belt
In addition to Shields' debut, WSOF 14 also marked the first heavyweight title fight in the organization chaired by Ray Sefo. Fighting at home, Canadian Smealinho Rama achieved a lightning knockout, in just 51 seconds, over North American Derrick Mehmen and won the title of the 120 kg division.
