Originally, the fight between Jones and Cormier was scheduled for UFC 178, on September 27th, surrounded by expectations after the fight between the two fighters at a press conference. Now the duel between Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso, valid for the flyweight belt and initially scheduled for UFC 177, was transferred to the following edition, taking over the main fight of the night.

This will be the eighth title defense by Jones, UFC light heavyweight champion since 2011. His original opponent would be Alexander Gustafson, who left the fight after injuring his knee.
