Amidst the controversy created as a result of the fight between Jan Blachowicz x Alex Poatán, John McCarthy came out in defense of the Brazilian's victory and harshly criticized the former light heavyweight champion's (up to 93kg) stance after the fight. A renowned referee in MMA, the North American declared that the Pole's actions were not enough to guarantee victory in the last round of the duel.
“He lost the fight. Just because you got a takedown with what, with thirty seconds left in the third round after losing four minutes and thirty seconds of the round, you think that a f***ing takedown is what gives you the victory? Come on, that’s bullshit,” said John while participating in the podcast 'Weighing In'.

To reinforce his argument, McCarthy compared the Pole's struggles against Israel adesanya and Poatan.
“It’s no different than when he fought Izzy. Jan Błachowicz won with 'Polish Power' by beating Izzy? No. How did he win? He took him down and was able to control him on the ground, land some blows, dictate the positioning of the fight and prevent Izzy from using his greatest skill. That's what he needed to do to beat Pereira. And he wasn't able to do it. He managed to do it in the first round. He managed to take him down in the third round and not do anything,” he concluded.
Defeated in a split decision by the judges, Blachowicz used his social networks to express his discontent with the result and stated that he was robbed in the duel against Poatan. The action divided the opinion of MMA fans, with some supporting and others criticizing the athlete's speech.
