Dana White, president of the UFC, is sure that Georges St Pierre, one of the biggest stars in the history of the organization, will still return to fights. Last year, the Canadian decided to step away from competition indefinitely, giving up his welterweight belt.
Even though the fighter does not guarantee that he will return to active duty, much less when he will make a decision, White has no doubts. “For me it is a fact that he will return”, he commented, in a press conference in an excerpt reproduced by the “MMA Fighting” website. “It’s fun for Georges St Pierre stay away? I wouldn’t say that, but the welterweight division is exciting, and when Georges does come back, he’ll have a fun fight no matter who he fights.”
Recently, GSP has been one of the most vocal critics of the current policy used to combat doping in MMA. For White, the recent ban on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) will not influence the fighter's decision. “That’s not why he left. He didn't leave because of TRT or anything like that. He left because he had personal problems and needed to deal with them. Many things ended up losing their true proportion. He left because of the reason he told me and Lorenzo [Fertitta, UFC partner],” he concluded.
This Saturday (15), the UFC will meet the fighter who will inherit St. Pierre's belt. In the main fight of UFC 171, John hendricks, GSP's last challenger, and Robbie Lawler will face each other in a fight valid for the welterweight title.
