Ben Askren, former Bellator welterweight champion, will make his debut at the One FC Asian event in May, in a fight that will win the category belt. The information was passed on by the fighter himself to the North American website MMA Junkie.
Askren gave up his Bellator title to try to sign a contract with the UFC, but negotiations were unsuccessful and the American found himself in an ungrateful position in his career. Therefore, he decided to join the Evolve MMA academy, in Singapore, and start working in the event that is the highlight in Asia.
He will face the winner of the fight between former UFC fighter Brock Larson and Nobutatsu Suzuki, which will determine the inaugural One FC welterweight champion. The fight will take place on March 14, in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
“I’m the best welterweight in the world and the fans will have to deal with that,” says Askren
Even with the momentary failure of his plans to win the UFC welterweight belt, Askren is convinced that he is the best fighter in the division on the planet.
“I'm the best welterweight in the world and the fans will have to deal with that. I will continue to win every fight they put in front of me, and, as a fighter, that is the best I can do. I can't challenge GSP to fight in a parking lot because we would get arrested and not make any money. As a fighter, all I can do is win the fights I set myself,” said Askren, in an interview with the North American website Yahoo Sports.
