Last week, a statement by bantamweight Michael McDonald stating that he has been sexually abstinent for three and a half years generated a huge controversy in the MMA world. The news quickly spread through the specialized media and became the subject of comments among fans. The commotion caused by the revelation, however, does not make sense to McDonald, who stated, in an interview with the “MMA Fighting” website, that he sees the practice as natural and something beneficial for his life.
“I was surprised on one side and not on the other. I am very proud of my abstinence. There was a time when this wasn't even in my vocabulary, I've been on both sides. People ask me, 'Is it because of your religious beliefs? For your athletic belief? Why did you do that?'. I've found that people approach me or react as if I've said, 'I haven't eaten in three and a half years.' As I said, I've been on both sides. I know what God says and that's what I'm going to do. I've been on both sides and being on this side now, I see that my life is better. I made the choice to be this way and stay this way,” said McDonald.
Controversies about his personal life aside, Michael McDonald has a big challenge ahead of him this Saturday (14). The North American faces the veteran Urijah faber at UFC on FOX 9, in Sacramento (USA). In the main fight of the night, the flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson face the number one challenger Joseph Benavidez.
