Just a few days before the event, which takes place on July 27th, the UFC on FOX 8 card suffered a series of casualties and had four significant changes. Injuries to Matt Mitrione, Spencer Fisher, Bobby Green and Siyar Bahadurzada promoted the arrival of new fighters on fight night and caused a fight to be cancelled.

Fisher was replaced by TUF 15 participant Daron Cruickshank in the match against Yves Edwards. Green gave way to Tim means in the duel against Danny Castillo. On the main card, it was up to Bobby Voelker to fill the spot left by Robbie Lawler. Matt Mitrione's injury meant that his fight against Brendan Schaub was removed from the card.

UFC on FOX 8, which features a flyweight belt fight between Demetrious Johnson and John Moraga as the main fight, had already had another important exit previously. At the end of May, Miesha Tate left the fight against Liz Carmouche to become a coach at TUF 18 and was replaced by the Brazilian Jessica Andrade.
