UFC fires fighter accused of domestic violence: 'We tried to help him many times'

Organization confirms dismissal of Luis Pena, suspected of attacking partner with punches last weekend

Ultimate's patience is over. Accused of attacking his partner with punches last weekend, Luis Pena is no longer part of the UFC roster. In a statement made to theTMZ', the organization confirmed the athlete's dismissal and explained the decision to get rid of the fighter.

“The UFC is aware of the accusations that resulted in the arrest of Luis Pena. Mr. Pena has been open about his mental health and substance abuse issues. The organization, on several occasions, tried to help him seek professional help for treatment,” they reported.

Next, Ultimate gave more details about the motivations for releasing the fighter from his contract. The fighter's reluctance to seek help was a determining factor in the decision.

“Right now, Mr. Pena needs to deal with his health and the legal issues in front of him. The fighter's team has already been informed that the agreement has been terminated”, they made official.

In a troubled time, last weekend's incident was not unprecedented in the athlete's life. Quite the opposite. A few months ago, the fighter had already been arrested, also for assault, in addition to robbery.

Outside of the UFC, the fighter leaves the company with eight fights played in the company. In total, the 70,3-year-old lightweight (up to 28kg) had five wins and three losses.
