The long trajectory of Charles of the Bronx even the UFC lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) serves as an example for many fighters. There are, however, those who belittle the achievement. Last week, Justin gaethje stated that the lightweight division became “the laughing stock of the organization” following Khabib’s retirement and the vacant title fight between Charles and Michael Chandler.

In an interview with the North American website Sherdog, Charles of the Bronx did not leave Gaethje unanswered. The champion reinforced all the effort he made to reach the top of the category and sent a message to the North American.

“What I have to say to Gaethje is: 'do your job, win your fights and earn your opportunity like I did, make it happen'. I'll be here with my belt. When you have nine wins in a row, you can complain to Dana. Nine months ago, I was seventh in the ranking asking for an opportunity against a top 5. Ten days before the UFC 256, Ferguson's opponent was injured and I was in shape ready to accept the UFC invitation. After completely dominating Ferguson, I got my chance to fight for the belt. I had 28 fights for the UFC in the last 11 years, I was coming off eight consecutive victories, I have the UFC bonus record, I broke the submission record for Royce gracie e Demian Maia in the organization. If I didn't have the right to fight for the belt, who should? If I’m the champion today it’s because I fought hard for it”, countered Charles.

Charles of the Bronx won the belt by knocking out Michael chandler No. UFC 262 in May this year. Although it has not yet been officially announced, the Brazilian's first title defense should take place in UFC 269, on December 11th, against Dustin poirier.
